On October 21, 2026, Reuters reported that eBay plans to eliminate approximately 9% of its workforce.

In a message to employees, CEO Jamie Iannone explained that the company wants to simplify how it operates and focus its investments on the parts of the business growing the fastest.

The cuts come as eBay expands its focus on areas such as luxury goods, collectibles, refurbished products and secondhand fashion.

An eBay spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, and affected employees are expected to learn about their jobs over the coming days.

It’s the second major round of eBay layoffs in 2026. In February, the company eliminated approximately 800 jobs, representing 6% of its workforce at the time.

How Much Severance Could eBay Employees Receive In Canada?

Non-unionized eBay employees in Canada could be entitled to up to 24 months’ severance pay when they’re fired or laid off. The amount depends on their age, years of service, position, employment contract and ability to find another job.

There’s no automatic rule that limits severance to one or two weeks of pay for every year you’ve worked. Someone who has spent several years at eBay could be owed considerably more than the company’s initial offer.

Your severance may also involve more than your base salary. Depending on your compensation arrangements, it could include:

  • Bonuses and incentive pay
  • Commissions
  • Health and other employment benefits
  • Stock awards, restricted stock units (RSUs) or other equity compensation
  • Other regular employment compensation

For employees who receive stock-based compensation, it’s especially important to understand what happens to unvested awards when their employment ends.

Don’t assume eBay’s severance offer includes everything you’re owed. An employment lawyer can review your complete compensation package and help you pursue more money.

What Are Your Rights If eBay Lays You Off?

eBay can’t avoid its severance obligations simply because it’s restructuring or cutting jobs worldwide. If your position is eliminated, you may still be entitled to substantial compensation.

What If eBay Calls Your Layoff Temporary?

If eBay tells you that your layoff is temporary, don’t assume you have to wait to be recalled.

In many cases, a non-unionized employee who is laid off without their agreement can treat the situation as a termination and pursue severance pay. Your employment contract matters, so get advice before deciding what to do.

What If eBay Offers You Another Position?

If eBay offers you a different job instead of terminating your employment, look carefully at what’s changing.

A significant reduction in pay, responsibilities or seniority may give you grounds to claim constructive dismissal and seek severance.

Don’t reject or accept a substantially different role without first understanding how it could affect your rights.

What Should You Do Before Signing An eBay Severance Package?

If you’ve lost your job at eBay, don’t rush to accept the company’s first offer. You could be entitled to substantially more money.

  1. Keep your documents. Save your termination letter, employment contract, severance package and any release you’re asked to sign.
  2. Review your full compensation. Gather information about your salary, bonuses, commissions, benefits and stock awards.
  3. Don’t sign under pressure. Take the time to understand what you’re being offered and what rights you may be giving up.
  4. Have your package reviewed. An employment lawyer can determine whether you’re owed more and help you pursue additional compensation.

⚠️ Don’t Rush To Sign: An acceptance deadline set by eBay isn’t the legal deadline for pursuing severance pay. Signing a release prevents you from claiming more. Get advice before signing.

An employment lawyer can review your severance package and negotiate additional compensation. Many severance disputes are resolved without going to court.
